Tip: Installing WordPress Multisite on IIS 7.5

December 27th, 2011

We at RIA Mobile Solutions love to use wordpress for certain projects as it just make sense for various reasons especially for a marketing driven CMS website. Since we support lot of clients, it also make sense to use the WordPress awesome Multisite feature to reap its benefits.  While configuring the wordpress 3.3 to turn on Multisite feature, I ran into an issue after following the steps on wordpress. Seems like a simple URL rewrite issue.

After you followed the steps needed to configure WordPress to use it as Multisite¬† on IIS, you might run in to an 404 error when you try to login. If you have installed multi-site in subdirectory mode i.e http://yourdomain.com/site1 , then the following fix in the URL rewrite section in web.config for “Rule 5″ will do it.

<rule name=”WordPress Rule 5″ stopProcessing=”true”>
<match url=”^[_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/(wp-(content|admin|includes).*)” ignoreCase=”false” />
<action type=”Rewrite” url=”{R:1}” />
</rule>

Now you can enjoy the wordpress multi site on Windows IIS 7!
